Anniversaries

ยท

There are two big anniversaries for me to celebrate this year.

The first is the 15 year of arts in Motion studio becoming a non profit. The second is the 40th year since I moved to GR to start teaching dance. In 1986 my son and I ventured across the state at the invitation of many long term friends to consider offer classes. At that time, there were very few extra curricular activities for individuals with disabilities and I had a vision and a passion. I believed that the arts should be available to everyone, I knew how they impacted my life, so I was certain they could make at least the same if not a bigger impact for my friends. My son and I spent a summer creatively camping and a path was laid that would become Arts in Motion Studio twenty five years later.

Many years I would speak about my passion and showcase the talents and joy of the students. I offered up experiences and opportunities that laid the groundwork that many students and staff stand on today.

I was asked about memories and moments perhaps to highlight one. I find that is impossible because everyday was filled with miracles, magic, laughter and the building of a community to believe, as I did that creativity is inherent in everyone of us especially if you foster a place to express it.

I have gratitude to my family and friends that walked with me and supporters every idea and event. Because passion begins the path but community allows it to grow and thrive.
A few years ago a parent told me my eyes were healed referring to the way i viewed and talked about my students . She knew that I saw my students for who they were and the potential of all they could and would be in a positive and hopeful light. I found that was the heart of all that I believe and a product of my lived experiences.

My mission with the studio became to create the space, found a community and ensure its growth. Happy 15 year anniversary Arts in Motion Studio! Happy 40 years of committed beliefs and following my vision of creative abilities to me. Forty years of teaching and advancing opportunities for all. There is much to celebrate.
